Diagnostic Tests

Focused Cytokine, Chemokine and Growth Factor Panel (15-Plex)

Indications: Use this test when identifying relevant therapy targets in severe or chronic inflammation.

ANALYTES / BIOMARKERS

GM-CSF, IFNγ, IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8 (CXCL8), IL-10, IL-12p40, IL-12p70, IL-13, MCP-1 (CCL2), TNFα

TURNAROUND-TIME (TAT)

1-5 Days

SAMPLE STABILITY

Samples collected for immune-related biomarkers are stable for approximately 1 year if kept frozen (-80˚C preferred).  Samples that are left at room temperature beyond 30 minutes during sample collection or are stored at 4˚C are not stable and are not acceptable unless they are processed in BD P-100 tubes.

PROCEDURE / TECHNIQUE

Luminex® 100/200 (Addressable LASER Bead Immunoassay)

REFERENCE RANGE

Available for plasma-EDTA, serum, and CSF.

CLINICAL ASSOCIATIONS

Indications: Use this test to identify relevant therapy targets, determine disease mechanisms, and diagnose or monitor the following conditions associated with immune regulation and inflammation:

  • Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases: Assess autoimmune and chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Elevated levels of cytokines like IL-1β, IL-6, TNFα, and IFNγ can indicate immune dysregulation and ongoing inflammation.
  • Infectious Diseases: Evaluate the immune response to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Cytokines like IFNγ, IL-2, IL-12p70, and MCP-1 (CCL2) are critical for the immune defense against pathogens, while chemokines such as IL-8 (CXCL8) indicate leukocyte recruitment to infection sites.
  • Cancer: Monitor tumor progression and response to therapy in various cancers, as cytokines like GM-CSF, IL-6, and TNFα are involved in tumor growth, immune modulation, and inflammation.
  • Allergic and Asthma Conditions: Diagnose and monitor allergic diseases and asthma, where cytokines like IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 play pivotal roles in mediating allergic inflammation and airway hyperreactivity.
  • Sepsis and Critical Illness: Diagnose and monitor sepsis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), where elevated levels of cytokines like IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNFα are markers of systemic inflammation and immune activation.
  • Neurological Disorders: Monitor neuroinflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease, where cytokines like IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα contribute to neuroinflammation and neuronal damage.

The interpretation of these test results should be correlated with clinical findings and other diagnostic tests. Cytokine levels can vary due to many biological, physiological, and diurnal factors; their clinical significance must be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional. This information is not intended to be used as the sole basis for diagnosis or treatment decisions.

This test consists of a subset of analytes from the comprehensive cytokine panel – consider that test for a more in-depth assessment of the immune activation profile
